Tryout/Evaluation Process

  • If evaluators determine that a player is not suited for a particular level, that player may be removed from those tryouts after the first session or even before the tryouts and assigned to the appropriate tryouts or evaluations.
  • Players may be moved between tryout levels (e.g., from AA to A/B or Rec, or from A/B to Rec evaluations).
  • Players who register and tryout for our travel program but are not selected for a travel team will be placed in Recreational evaluations to determine their appropriate placement on a recreational team.
  • Final Payment
  • The final balance will be charged only after tryouts are completed and players have been assigned to teams.
  • The amount of the final balance will vary depending on the team to which the player is assigned.
  • Once teams are assigned, families will be required to accept an offer to join the team which will automatically charge the final balance or create a payment plan.

Check-In & Jerseys

Players must show up for the specified tryout group and session time. No exceptions.

Check-in will be located in the lobby at the bottom of the blue stairs and will open 45 minutes prior to the scheduled tryout time.

It is our expectation that players at the High School, 19U, 16U and 14U levels will check themselves in and not the parent. This is a great way for us to get to know their faces.

Jerseys will be supplied for tryouts. Players must check in to receive a tryout jersey.

Jerseys will be collected on the ice following each session. Players who do not return their jersey will be assessed an additional charge of $85.00.

Travel Team Tryout Procedure

Tryout groups and times for the first day of tryouts will be posted on the website.

Check your Family Calendar for current group assignment and schedule.

Updated groupings and times will be posted on the website following the final session each night.

Travel teams will be selected in the following order (AA - A - B).

All teams will be posted after the final tryout session.

ALL COMMUNICATION DURING THE TRYOUT PROCESS WILL BE CONDUCTED VIA THE HYLAND HILLS JAGUARS WEBSITE. INDIVIDUAL EMAILS WILL NOT BE USED. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CHECK AND REVIEW AS OFTEN POSSIBLE AS THINGS MAY CHANGE AND BE UPDATED.

Parents

Parents are not allowed in locker rooms. If players need assistance with gear, that player must use hallway chairs or benches.

If your player is using the locker room, please discuss respecting each other and the facility. A zero-tolerance policy is in place and will be enforced if violated. Players who violate the zero-tolerance policy will be asked to leave the program and all payments will be forfeited.

While we understand the excitement that comes with watching your child during tryouts, we ask that parents and guardians observe the sessions from spectator areas away from evaluators. This allows our players and coaches to focus and perform at their best without distractions.

Any player or adult who does not abide by the HHHA Code of Conduct may, at the sole discretion of the Board of Directors, be required to leave the building and/or the player may be banned from this year’s tryouts in addition to other discipline available under the policies/rules of conduct. Violations of this conduct may result in player disqualification/expulsion from the tryout process and forfeiture of all fees.

Final Player Placement

  • Final player team placements will be announced on the website within 24 hours following the completion of the final tryout session at each level.
  • The decisions of the evaluators are final. Communication between parents and any evaluator, board member or Hyland Hills Jaguars Representative with regards to player placement is prohibited.
  • If you would like feedback after the tryout, age specific coordinators will be identified and shared with the membership. Responses will not be given until 7 days following tryouts.
  • Phone calls and phone messages will not be returned.
  • Please refrain from any social media posts. Almost every evaluator at Hyland is a volunteer and giving their time to help place your child in a position to have success.

Player Participation in Tryouts

Player Selected Tryout Position

  • Players were asked to select a desired position (forward or defense) during the registration process, and this does not guarantee that a player will be selected for a specific position during tryouts.
  • Members of the tryout evaluation group at all levels during tryouts are instructed to evaluate all players regardless of position. This includes skating, stick-handling, hockey IQ and overall ability and to place every player on a team to be in a “position” to have a season of success.

Goalie Selection

  • Every effort will be made to equalize the number of minutes a goalie is on the ice per tryout session.
  • Goalies shall be rotated to provide exposure to different skater groups throughout the tryout process and to be evaluated against as many of the other goalies at their age grouping as possible.
  • Players who tryout and are selected for a travel team as a goalie will participate on the team as a full-time goaltender.

Injured Players

  • Players who are injured and unable to participate in tryouts or are injured during tryouts may still be placed on a Hyland Hills Jaguars Travel Team.
  • This will be done on a case-by-case basis and does not guarantee placement on a travel team.
  • If a skater is unable to participate in tryouts due to an injury, a doctor’s note may be required to be released from tryouts.
  • The JAG will determine team placement after consulting with the previous year’s coach which may include current age-level coaches and coaching coordinator(s).

Non-Injured Players

  • If someone is unable to attend tryouts for a non-medical reason, Hyland Hills cannot guarantee placement on a travel team. All such situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the JAG. In the event placement on a travel team is not granted, players fees will be transferred to the Hyland Hills Recreational Program at the conclusion of tryouts.

Coaches

If you are interested in coaching either as a head coach or assistant coach, please make sure to fill out a coaching application on the website under the resources tab. Applications are mandatory for all coaches who want to apply for coaching positions and must be completed prior to coach selection.

The AA tryouts will be conducted by the Jaguars Hockey Director, the JAG, AA coaches and other evaluators selected by the JAG.

During the tryout process, the JAG will finalize the 10U A and 10U B head coaches.

Team Formation

Hyland Hills plans and budgets each year prior to the tryout start date based on projected numbers at all levels which includes the following at each age level:

  • YOUTH: One (1) AA Level Team / One (1) A Level Team / One (1) B Level Team
  • GIRLS: One (1) Team per Age Level

They Hyland Hills Board of Directors and JAG reserves the right to adjust the above team count and levels based on number of players, including overall talent levels and ice availability.

They Hyland Hills Board of Directors and JAG reserves the right to select multiple teams within the same division by tiering or equal draft procedures.

Following the final tryout at each level, teams will be posted on the website, and if selected on a travel team you will receive a team confirmation within 24 hours via CROSSBAR. Players must accept and complete in entirety within 24 hours.

NO REFUND will be given to players who are unsatisfied with their players’ team placement. Season dues must be paid in full and are required to receive a Financial Release from Hyland Hills if a player attends tryouts and decides to leave.

Players who do not make a travel team will have registration fees paid to date (less the tryout/processing fees) transferred to the recreational program.
