Season Registration Girls

"The 2022/23 Season

Starts September 6th, 2022

Ends the first week of March 2023

Welcome to the 2022-23 Season for Hyland Hills Girl’s Hockey!

Our girls program focuses on growing and developing players from beginners to competitive athletes. We have had tremendous growth and success and will be adding additional teams this year. Specifically, we have added two competitive travel teams. As we grow as an organization, we are committed to having a path for players of all skill levels and we need a path for competitive players other than playing on a boy’s team.  Our players, who have been in the association from their start, have progressed under this program and we have skilled players that want to be at the next level. Our competitive travel teams will be participating in the Western Girls Hockey League (WGHL) which is a Tier 2 (AA) league. We are excited as an organization to take this step! As always, our main girls’ teams are the foundation of our program and, we believe, the foundation of girl’s hockey in Colorado.  We feel that we have created the best environment and coaching staff in the state that allow players to improve their skills, develop friendships, and learn an appreciation and love of the game. Please click on the individual team links below for more information.

Here is to a successful season full of growth and fun!

Game Jerseys

Hyland Game Jerseys are sold as a set (Home/White and Away/Black) for $250. For many players, the jersey will last you many years.

You will have the opportunity to order jerseys at the completion of registration.

10U Girls (2012 & 2013 birth years)

Head Coach: Ryan Lewis – USA Hockey Level 4, Hyland Hills Coach 2014-Present, over 20 years coaching experience

Leagues: CRHL, CGHL

Our 10U girls team welcomes players of all experience level. The focus for this age group is primarily on skill development and teaching a basic understanding of defensive zone coverage, face-offs, and a simple offensive zone system. The leap from 8U to 10U is significant as all the full ice rules apply including offsides, icings, and penalties. Understanding these fundamentals early in the season will be emphasized to increase game enjoyment.

Preliminary practice times will be Tuesday at 5:00PM, Wednesday at 6:15PM and every other Friday at 445PM, shared with the 12U teams.

We will play in the CRHL and the tiering games start in October generally with one game per weekend. How the participation in the CGHL will look is uncertain at this point. It may just result in an end of year tournament or there may be league games required against other teams.

Girls’ specific tournaments are more challenging to find however there are lots of 10U co-ed tournaments available to participate within the state. You can expect 4 in-state tournaments for the season.

Silver Stick Regional Tournament – End of October

Woodland Park Outdoor Tournament – Beginning of February

Avalanche Cup – End of February

One more TBD – Likely candidates are the Vail Tournament, Squirt Scare or Steamboat Springs

12U Girls Rec (2010 & 2011 birth years)

Head Coach: To Be Determined

Leagues: CRHL and CGHL

Our 12U girls’ team is designed for players that have played less than 3 years of hockey to learn, or continue to progress, their skill development and increase their understanding of team play. This team will cater to newer players and players that are not comfortable making the commitment (time and/or financial) to a competitive program. That does not mean that the players will not be pushed and challenged as they will be practicing with the competitive players. We will be able to scale skill-based practices and small area games to meet the levels of individual players as we have done in the past.

Practices will be 2-3 times per week. These will be joint practices with all the 12Us and 10Us.

Games for the CRHL are typically one per weekend starting in October. There are tiering games that will put the teams in the appropriate divisions within the CRHL. These are played throughout the front range from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs with the potential for games in the mountains. The format for CGHL games is still uncertain.

Tournaments will primarily be in-state with the possibility of a road trip to New Mexico for CGHL games.

·       Silver Stick Regional- End of October

·       CGHL Avalanche Cup – End of February

·       Woodland Park, Vail or Steamboat as potential.

·       Possible Mountain jamboree for CGHL games

Off-ice activity will be decided on by the coaches when selected.  We are encouraging our players to have an at-home shooting/stickhandling practice and will help to set them up with practice drills.

•          3rd place- Steamboat Squirt Scare (competitive B level)

Leagues: WGHL Tier 2 (AA), CCYHL A Division

At Hyland Hills we believe every girl should have the option of playing at a competitive level to reach their full potential without having to play boy’s hockey.  We believe they should be allowed to develop and have fun for a reasonable price in a player driven atmosphere.  Players first, having fun and developing a lifelong love of hockey at the level they desire.

In order to give our girls, the opportunity to play at the next level, we will have a 12U AA (2010-2011 birth years) girls team that will compete in the Western Girls Hockey League (WGHL) as a competitive tournament team.  This will consist of about 20 games and playoffs.  We will also compete in Girls Silverstick and potentially one other local tournament.

The selection process will be by invite and we will reach out to have personal conversations with families. The roster for this team will be capped at 15 skaters and 2 goalies.  This all depends on registration numbers, so spread the word to all girl hockey players that you know!

Coach Joe

14U Girls Competitive Travel (2008 & 2009 birth years)

Head Coach: Nathan Pugh – USA Hockey Level 4, Current Girl’s Hockey Director, 10 years coaching experience at Hyland Hills (2001-2006, 2017-Present), Monarch Girls High Plains Club Coordinator and Head Coach 2020-Present, 2 years coaching experience at Airdrie Minor Hockey (Canada)

Leagues: WGHL Tier 2 (AA), CRHL

The 14U Competitive Travel team is a new addition for Hyland Hills Hockey this year. I personally feel that there isn’t any difference to how we will coach a competitive team versus a rec team. The biggest difference is the level of commitment that is expected from players and parents. Part of that commitment is to out of state showcase weekends for the WGHL. Schedule and dates are below in the season plan.  Commitment from the players focuses on the mindset for skill improvement, effort in practices on and off the ice, and individual accountability to themselves and the team.  To play on this team there must be a solid foundation of hockey skills. Players should typically have 3+ years of playing experience and the desire to compete at a higher level. We are purposely keeping the roster smaller than the typical 18-20 player roster you would see at 14U-AA.  This will make our practices extremely structured and increase practice touches as well as more game ice time. The selection process will be by invite and we will reach out to have personal conversations with families.

Practices will be 2-3 times per week. Tuesdays at 6PM, Wednesdays at 730PM and every other Friday at 445PM.  These will be joint practices with the 15/19U group. There will be other irregular practice times as we can secure ice.

Games for the CRHL are typically one per weekend starting in October. There are tiering games that will put the teams in the appropriate divisions within the CRHL. WGHL games are held during 4 showcase weekends. 3 of these weekends will be out of state as follows.

September 23-25: Seattle, WA

November 11-13: Salt Lake City, UT

December 16-18: Phoenix, AZ

February 2-5: Championships weekend in Denver, CO

Tournaments

Silver Stick Girls Regionals – End of October

CGHL Avalanche Cup – End of February

One additional in-state tournament or mountain exhibition trip- January. There are a couple of options for tournaments in the mountains or we could organize a weekend of exhibition games and some team building activities.

Breaks:  Two scheduled breaks at Thanksgiving and at Christmas so families can plan other activities. Players would be free to participate in other events if they desire (ie. Silver Belle 3v3 between Christmas and New Year).

Off-ice program

Off-ice will consist of a dryland training component and a sports psychology component. This will be 1-2 times per week and likely 2-3 times at the start of the season. Dryland will focus on speed, power development, and agility. We are in talks with a venue but will be outside as much as possible until the time change in October limits our daylight.  We will do off-ice sessions at the roller hockey rink to cover positioning and systems concepts. Our sports psychology program will focus on team dynamics, relationships and motivation delivered by the University of Denver’s sports psychology masters program students. We are currently evaluating tools for video evaluation. We will not do full team video analysis. These will be done as individual study and small groups. We will be looking at some team building exercises away from the rink but those are TBD.

Our estimated costs for the season break down as follows:

Registration Fee: $1493

Team Fees (tournaments and off-ice events): $1010

Season Cost (excluding personal travel costs): ~$2,503

*A USA Hockey registration and fee applies for the 2022-2023 season and is applicable to all teams/levels

We feel that with a small team size and a focus on player and team development that we can accelerate our athletes progress tremendously this year! Look forward to seeing you in August.

Coach Nathan

15U Girls (2007, 2008, & 2009 birth years)

Head Coach: Jillian Knapp-Rhodes – USA Hockey Level 4, Hyland Hills Coach 2021-Present, Monarch Girls HPHL Coach 2020-Present, Longmont Ice Hockey Coach 2014-2021, Lynx/Lady Roughriders 2012-2014, Coach CU Women’s ACHA 2002-2003

Leagues: CRHL, CGHL

Our 15U program welcomes players from all skill levels and experience. The past couple of seasons we have had many girls start hockey at this age group. Practices are designed to keep players of similar skill levels together and new players have accelerated rapidly in their skill development and are able to contribute in games during the season. Our more experienced players take on more of a leadership position and have been able to play with our 19U squad as well (depending on registration numbers and player availability).

Practices will be 2-3 times per week. Tuesdays at 6PM, Wednesdays at 730PM and every other Friday at 445PM.  These will be joint practices with the 15/19U group. This will also allow us to scale players to their appropriate skill level.

Games for the CRHL are typically one per weekend starting in October. There are tiering games that will put the teams in the appropriate divisions within the CRHL. Head Coach: Scott Maureaux- USA Hockey Level 4, Hyland Hills Coach 2004-Present, High Plains Coach 2017-Present

Leagues: CRHL, CGHL

Our 19U program is a hybrid of competitive and recreational hockey. The skill level, coaching, and player motivation is typical of a competitive team but allows players to play in-state without the expense and time for traveling out of state to play. We find our players want to continue to build their hockey skills  and team relationships while being able to focus on school and/or work. This team is about setting players up to be hockey players for life and fostering the love of the game.

Practices will be 2-3 times per week. Tuesdays at 6PM, Wednesdays at 730PM and every other Friday at 445PM.  These will be joint practices with the 15/19U group.
