Locker Room Monitors
The presence of adults in the locker rooms is critical to maintaining a safe and positive environment. Over the past five years it has become clear that more than half of all SafeSport incidents reported each year occur in locker rooms. In all but a few cases, there was no locker room monitor present.
- Every team will have at least two non-coach locker room monitors rostered (these can include managers, and other volunteers)
- Every team event where a locker room is used two locker room monitors will be present in the locker room. If an event occurs that only one non-coach locker room monitor is present, that monitor will be directly in the doorway or immediately outside the door in ear shot, regularly checking in with the team.
- Coaches will not be the only locker room monitors.
- Locker room monitors will be gender appropriate.
- All locker room monitors will be background screened, SafeSport trained and appropriate for the role assigned.
BECOMING A LOCKER ROOM MONITOR
Below are all the links to the required trainings and registrations to become a locker room monitor.
1) USA HOCKEY REGISTRATION
Locker room monitors are required to register with USA Hockey as a Manager/Volunteer. There is no registration fee. You will be prompted to enter your USA Hockey confirmation number into your Hyland Registration.
2) HYLAND VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION
Once you have your USA Hockey confirmation number, please complete the Hyland Volunteer Registration. When prompted to select a participant to register, select yourself OR choose + NEW PARTICIPANT and add your name and information for this volunteer registration.
3) USA HOCKEY BACKGROUND SCREENING
On average, background screens take between 3-10 business days to complete. Cost is $30 for all domestic screens, which are valid for 2 seasons. USAH does not accept background checks completed for any other organization. Reimbursement of your background screen will come out of your TEAM ACCOUNT. Please ensure that your treasurer has added this cost into the team budget. USA Hockey has already entered your self-registration ID number on the first page of the screen. You do not need to change this number.
4) SAFESPORT TRAINING
SafeSport Training is required for all locker room monitors, managers and coaches. The log-in for Safe Sport Training is NEW for 2025-26 season. You will need a USA Hockey username and to create a new password. Select forgot username, if you do not have your username yet. Enter the requested information; an email will be sent with the username to your email that was used when registering for your membership.
